GAIA SpA (Integrated Environmental Management of the Asti area) was created to deal with the treatment, recovery and disposal of urban waste produced by the 114 member municipalities of the province of Asti to which waste from other areas of Italy was added after the inclusion of the member operational Iren Ambiente in 2017.
With Iren Ambiente, steps were taken to upgrade the plant and integrate GAIA into a wider waste management network. The company also deals with waste-related activities such as studies, research, communication, sale of recovered materials and products and electricity generated through the combustion of landfill biogas.
All GAIA sites have achieved EMAS registration (highest European recognition for environmental management). The registered office is in Asti and, in the industrial area, the “Waste treatment centre” which includes two plants: one for the valorisation of separated waste materials and the other for the mechanical biological treatment of undifferentiated urban waste
In San Damiano d’Asti organic waste is recovered by producing compost and biomethane to be fed into the network, in Cerro Tanaro non-recoverable waste is disposed of in the “landfill for non-hazardous waste” and finally in the province of Asti 12 collection centers are managed ( Ecostations) where to deliver materials not intercepted with home collections.
