The general context of the project is that of climate change. With regard to rainfall, our planet shows an increasingly sudden, concentrated, and violent pattern; this will inevitably lead to a higher probability of medium- to small-scale floods (particularly severe and frequent in areas with complex orography and the presence of small basins), which nonetheless involve large volumes of water in relation to the size of the affected territory.
The project therefore aims to complement modern forecasting systems, essentially based on satellite observations and large C-Band radars (with an operating frequency of around 5 GHz), with a system that, through constant monitoring of rainfall, makes it possible to assess and predict in the short term (20–30 minutes) the exceedance of predefined hazard levels of ongoing phenomena.
For the three participating companies, this refers to the possibility of expanding their customer base to public and/or private entities in the field of integrated systems for hydrogeological risk forecasting and prevention.
As for the lead company, there is also the prospect of selling radar stations to one or more regional or provincial entities that intend to collect and process the data and possibly resell it to organizations providing services in specific sectors such as agriculture, security, and mobility.
