The objective is to make monitoring systems applicable to aerospace technology through the study of innovative materials. In particular, prototypes of non-conventional sensors will be designed and developed for application on innovative flying structures, characterized by new shapes, dimensions, and especially materials.
The study will focus on detecting elements with the greatest societal impact, namely the main greenhouse gases carbon dioxide and methane (CO₂ and CH₄), nitrogen dioxide and sulfur dioxide (NO₂ and SO₂, harmful to human health and mainly derived from combustion), as well as solid particulate matter (PM10 and smaller). Measurements will be carried out using different sensors and technologies, which will be compared and, where possible, selected to ensure results comparable to standard measurement systems.
The analysis will also aim to identify the most appropriate methodologies to extrapolate “ground-level” measurements used by public authorities responsible for defining air quality. This will be achieved through a multiscale analysis performed with unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs, commonly known as drones), capable of conducting two-dimensional measurements (i.e., horizontally distributed at a given altitude) or vertical stratigraphies of the air column
The final part of the project will focus on defining models and algorithms capable of explaining the relationships between the various available data, ensuring their consistency regardless of the acquisition methods and scale.
The immediate impact on the increase of the individual companies’ know-how appears to be the first result to highlight: indeed, all the companies involved will be able to enhance their knowledge and expertise in the field of environmental monitoring, which is currently of limited interest for their commercial purposes.
